In the final episode of the first season of the podcast Business Club, the guest was Branko Azeski, President of the Economic Chamber of North Macedonia, who shared his perspective on the state of Macedonian business.
According to Azeski, the first impression of those who followed the podcast is that Macedonia has a favorable business climate. However, he emphasized that a high-quality business plan and precise projects for its development are essential. In addition to the first 20 individuals with whom he spoke as the host of Business Club—who demonstrated consistency in their knowledge of key business development issues—many young entrepreneurs are also contributing to the Macedonian economy.
"Their thoroughness, professionalism, and shared perspectives on key business development issues show that we are talking about a generation of people who possess the knowledge, wisdom, and experience necessary for running a business," Azeski stated.
When asked about the frequent use of the term oligarchs to describe Macedonian businesspeople, Azeski offered his interpretation of the word. He argued that it is merely a cliché used to distract from real issues and that the term does not accurately reflect the strength of the Macedonian economy. In his view, for oligarchs to exist—who could influence policymakers to pass regulations favoring their position—the state budget would have to be far larger than it currently is. He stressed that there are no oligarchs in Macedonia and expressed concern that the business community lacks unity, as expected, and is instead characterized by envy. "If unity prevailed, we would be better in every aspect," Azeski remarked.
He sees himself as a child of the transition period and believes that he is still living through it, as there has never been a time when citizens' living standards significantly improved or when company productivity increased.
He went on to explain a statement he made after his first election as President of the Chamber in 2005—that he would create a five-star chamber, like the hotel where he once worked. He said this to boost optimism among businesspeople and encourage them to believe in their future. From today’s perspective, he acknowledges that he may not have created a five-star chamber or an ideal business environment for companies, as not everything depends on him but also on the state. However, he did achieve "five stars" in human capital by developing a team of about 15 top experts who will continue working in the Chamber.
The first season of Business Club featured prominent young leaders from the Macedonian business scene, representing various industries—including construction, food manufacturing, brewing, the automotive industry, e-marketing, and banking—as well as renowned experts from multiple fields. Through conversations with the President of the Economic Chamber, who served as host and moderator, viewers gained insights into these individuals' stories, experiences, development paths, and personal strategies for survival in the Macedonian business environment. They also discussed the challenges of promoting their brands on global markets, as Macedonian brands compete on equal footing with international counterparts offering similar products. Their role in representing the Macedonian economy is significant. In addition to improving services and products, they create jobs, pay taxes, contribute to the budget, increase GDP, invest, and drive the country’s economic growth.
